Geometrica’s Freedome® (largest dome worldwide)

Description

This dome is available for sale and can be used for many different purposes, including coal storage, bulk material handling, industrial warehousing, energy infrastructure, and other large-scale storage or containment applications.

Geometrica’s Freedome® coal storage cover built (2016) for a  thermoelectric power plant.
The project is presented as a landmark achievement in bulk material storage, setting a new standard for environmental protection and structural engineering.

The Freedome® is a large free-form steel structure designed to completely enclose coal stockpiles, replacing traditional uncovered yards. With spans reaching hundreds of meters, it eliminates dust emissions, reduces environmental impact, and protects material from weather exposure.

The client commissioned the project as part of an initiative to improve environmental performance at the coal fired power plant. Due to the coastal location, the structure was engineered to withstand strong winds and high seismic loads.

Construction was completed in December 2016. The structure consists of galvanized steel tubes connected by aluminum hubs, using fully mechanical connections with no welding. Most components were prefabricated, labeled, and assembled on site using a perimeter-up construction method, allowing efficient installation with local labor. The project achieved a perfect safety record.

The enclosure includes galvanized and painted steel cladding, translucent panels for natural lighting, and a large ventilation cap at the top to assist air circulation. The project is described as the first coal storage cover of its kind at a power plant, demonstrating a shift away from traditional open stockpiles toward more sustainable and modern solutions.

Overall, the Freedome® is highlighted as a breakthrough project that combines environmental responsibility, advanced structural design, and efficient construction, marking a significant step forward in industrial storage infrastructure.
